Adam Jones wins Giza showdown

Egypt’s Giza Plateau, home to the Sphinx and the ancient civilization built around the brooding pyramids, saw Adam Jones win the second round of the 2010 Red Bull X-Fighters Freestyle MX, held in Egypt last Friday. Twelve of the world’s best riders performed all manner of mid-air stunts and tricks, and as the course was required to be built without using dirt, resulting in a smaller, ramps-only affair, it made the event anyone’s for the taking.

Round one pared the field down to eight, with Jones, Villa, Nate Adams, Robbie Maddison, Levi Sherwood, Eigo Sato, Jim McNeil, and Libor Podmol all making the cut. Round two was a head-to-head affair in which each rider had two minutes to perform eight jumps. The second match-up saw Jones facing Sherwood. The 19-year-old New Zealander was keen, right from the first jump, to prove he came to compete.

The other round two match-ups featured 2009 X-Fighters overall champion Adams against Arizona’s McNeil and Villa versus Polish hard-charger Podmol. McNeil never had a chance once Adams unleashed not one but two 360 degree flips, no mean feat on the ramp-to-ramp course. As for Villa, any talk of momentum dimmed, as he struggled to hold off Podmol.

In the semi final things got more competitive, as riders had just three minutes on the clock, and the lower-ranked rider went first and the higher-ranked rider “answered” his best tricks. The second semi featured Maddison and Villa. Maddison highlighted his run with a clean lazy-boy flip, but it wasn’t enough to stop Villa. The final was an eight minute match, head to head: Jones versus Villa. Villa made a mistake performing his Superman seat grab, so the overall victory went to Adams.
