Lorenzo takes Assen pole

Jorge Lorenzo took pole position in a largely uneventful qualifying session in Assen, with LCR Honda rider Randy de Puniet finishing second.

The Fiat Yamaha rider led almost throughout the session, despite de Puniet leading for a brief period around the mid-point, posting a time of 1:34.515 to take pole, 0.282 seconds ahead of de Puniet.
De Puniet successfully held off a late surge from Casey Stoner to taken his second consecutive front row.

Ben Spies qualified in fourth whilst compatriot Nicky Hayden was the last rider to dip under the 1:35 benchmark, posting a time of 1:34.999.

Dani Pedrosa’s title hopes suffered another blow as the Repsol Honda rider could only manage seventh position.
