Biaggi scores Monza pole

Max Biaggi returned to the top of the World Superbike field at Monza this afternoon, to take his first pole position of the season.

Performing infront of his home crowd, reigning champion Biaggi also set a new best lap time around the infamous venue, with a time of 1m41.745 seconds on his way to pole. Aiming to achieve that bit more, the Aprilia Alitalia rider also recorded an all time fastest lap average in WSB history, with a speed of 204.405kmph.

Joining Biaggi on the front row are three different makes of bike. Eugene Laverty will line up alongside Biaggi on teh front row of the grid for the first of tomorrow’s two races, with Assen winner Jonathan Rea and WSB veteran Troy Corser.

The second row of the grid is headed by Marco Melandri, with Leon Haslam next to him and looking to secure a strong finish. Seventh place will go to the Team Suzuki Alstare rider Michel Fabrizio, whilst Noriyuki Haga secured an eighth place start.

Ayrton Badovini secured a strong Superpole outing to start ninth for race one, with Brit Leon Camier rounding out the top ten. Despite tasting success at each round so far this seaosn, Carlos Checa could only manage eleventh place, just ahead of Sylvain Guintoli in twelfth.

Tomorrow is set to host the next two races of the 2011 WSB Championship, with the Monza crows as ready as ever for an exciting showdown.
