Bike Safe 2010 draws 11,800
National Bike Safe 2010 attracted some 11,800 visitors at Sheffield Arena over the weekend, making it one of the most successful regional motorcycle shows so far in 2010. The event was co-sponsored by South Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership and the MCIA ( Motorcycle Industry Association ) with the twin aims of reducing bike casualties and raising awareness of the Get On campaign.
Get On is a media campaign designed to showcase the attractions and benefits of biking and is supported by UK importers, manufacturers, plus leading companies like Phoenix Distribution and Carole Nash Insurance. Nikki Kelly from the MCIA was managing the Get On taster sessions at Sheffield and was pleased with the attendance;
” We had around 155 people try a scooter or 125cc motorcycle for the very first time, which was really good news,” commented Nikki, ” as biking needs new, young riders to get the biking bug. The taster also brought in riders who have taken a break from biking and want to take up the sport once again, so having a refresher course before getting a new machine is always a good idea.”
Some 80 demo machines were on hand from leading brands like Honda, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Suzuki, Ducati and BMW were at the show, with around 400 riders having a try on their dream bike. The new S1000RR and R1200 GS BMWs proved popular, alongside the Ducati Multistrada and Yamaha XTZ1200 Tenere. Out of those 400 demo rides, all with a free Police rider assessment as part of the experience, there wasn’t one reported incident. Bikers could also get a free assessment taking 30-40 minutes using their own bike, which Bob and Sandra from Chesterfield tried out on their Guzzi California.
“I liked the ride, although it was odd to have a Police bike following you at first,” said Bob who has been riding for over 30 years. Meanwhile Bob’s pillion Sandra was asked if the assessment had improved his riding; “Not really any difference that I could see. But I hope he’ll take notice of any constructive criticism!” she added. The show had stunt action from Heidi and Mikko the Extreme Globe Riders, plus Dave Coates on his Yamaha R1, Steve Colley on his Gas Gas trilas bike and a KTM Supermoto demo by Ady Smith and his team. Entertainment continued outdoors with a `Easy-Wheelie’ simulator, plus Fire service vehicles and a fun fair for the family too.
Exhibitors at the show were unanimous in their praise of the show’s organisation, which was promoted locally via Real Radio. “Very impressed, said Vanessa from MAG, whilst Ian Leach from Winn’s Solicitors, who had a VIP Silverstone BSB tickets competition running over the weekend, agreed that South Yorkshire Police had put on a great event; “Stunt action, demo rides, plenty of trade stands and free admission, you can’t fault it can you?”
One lucky lady visitor also went home the proud owner of a brand new Honda CBF600N, donated by the MCIA as the top prize at the event. Bike Safe looks set to happen in Yorkshire once again next year, with details to be confirmed early in 2011.
