Bike sales down again in July

UK motorcycle dealers had another difficult month in July, with total new motorcycle registrations for the month down 7.15% on last year.

July saw 9,777 new registrations of powered two wheelers in the UK against 10,465 in July 2009, brining year-to-date registrations to a total of 62,278 – 14.55 down on last year.

Total scooter sales saw a small 0.7% increase on the same month last year, with 3,226 new registrations, although YTD sales still remain down by 10.8%.

In terms of sales by engine size, only the 51-125cc category (up 0.2%) and the 1000cc+ category (up 8.9%) saw an increase compared to the month last year whilst the 1000cc+ band is the only sector of the market to have shown growth YTD, up 4% on last year.

Yamaha dealers were the ones with most to cheer in July, with the manufacturer topping the sales charts with 1,572 new registrations as the manufacturer boasted having the top three selling models in July.

The Yamaha YBR 125 topped the sales charts with 253 units, closely followed by Yamaha YZF-R125, which had 217 new registrations and the Yamaha XC 125 scooter (172 registrations).

Honda shifted the second most with 1,114 registrations whilst Triumph just edged out Suzuki, selling 786 units against Suzuki’s 754.

BMW’s R 1200 GS Adventure was the top selling adventure sport model, whilst the manufacturer’s R 1200 RT topping the touring sector. Suzuki topped the sport/tour and trail/endure categories with the GSX 1250 FA and the RV 125 VAN VAN respectively, whilst the Kawasaki VN900 was the best seller in the custom category.
