BMW issues major recall
BMW has issued a recall for around 122,000 motorcycles worldwide amid concerns over a serious brake fault.
Customers of the R 1200 GS Adventure model, the R 1200 GS, the R 1200 R, the R 1200 RT, the R 1200 ST and the K 1200 GT, of which there are around 6,600 in the UK will be contacted by BMW dealers to have their bikes inspected amid complaints from British bikers.
The recall comes after complaints that vibrations could cause the front brake lines to develop leaks that could allow brake fluid to escape, potentially leading to a failure of the front brakes.
No accidents have been reported in relation to the fault, BMW said, and only a small number of complaints have been received although this is the second such recall to be issued by the company in just two years, with a similar recall issued in 2008.
“BMW Motorrad has announced the recall of R-Series boxer-twin and K 1200 GT motorcycles, manufactured between August 2006 and May 2009, after a potential fault in a brake pipe was diagnosed,” read a statement from the manufacturer.
“It is possible that vibrations on affected motorcycles could cause the front brake pipe to leak and, over an extended period of time, brake fluid to escape.
“BMW Motorrad would like to reassure customers that the number of motorcycles, in which leaking brake pipes was noticed, is very small (one-tenth of a per cent). No accidents have arisen as a result of this fault.
“In the event of this happening, riders will notice the leaking brake fluid or a reduction in the brake fluid level in the handlebar mounted brake fluid reservoir. This may result in a gradual loss of braking performance of the front brake. The rear brake is not affected.”
