Boris Keeps Bus Lane Pledge

London Mayor Boris Johnson has kept his pledge to the capital’s two-wheeler users by opening up bus lanes to motorcycles, mopeds and scooters.

From the 5th January 2009 all motorcycles, mopeds and scooters will be able to share the TfL bus lanes in London, on an 18 month trial basis. Oppositon from cycling and other action groups has been strong, which is why the scheme will be monitored in case accidents rise. That seems unlikely as a previous study of selected trial routes in London showed a 42% drop in motorcycle accidents.

The BMF have been long-standing campaigners for bike use in bus lanes and welcomed the news;

“This is great news and although it’s only a trial, we are confident it will be a success.” commented Jeff Stone. “The BMF have been campaigning for UK-wide bus lane use since the mid 1990s and there now fourteen towns and cities successfully operating such systems. We look forward to London joining them.”
