Camier celebrates 2009 title
Leon Camier has secured the 2009 British Superbike Championship title, after roaring to victory in the opening event of the penultimate round at Silverstone.
Despite dropping to fourth as the lights diminished, Camier overcame the challenges from his rivals – Stuart Easton, James Ellison and Josh Brookes – to ride to an emotional win and the BSB title he had worked for all year.
Easton got the better of his rivals at the start, immediately jumping into the lead, while Camier’s Airwaves Yamaha teammate, Ellison, Brookes and Camier were forced to follow behind; but Camier’s determination was no match for Camier’s opponents, as he rode to the victory he had wanted all season.
Ellison made it a one-two for Airwaves Yamaha, while Brookes completed the podium, ahead of Easton and Tommy Hill. John Laverty, Sylvain Guintoli and Ian Lowry followed, with Simon Andrews and Julien Da Costa completing the top ten.
Race two was a role reversal for the Airwaves Yamaha duo, with Ellison taking to the top step of the podium ahead of Camier.
After one lap the second BSB race of the day was red flagged due to oil on the track at Abbey. A number of riders crashed off of the Silverstone circuit as a result of the unsighted oil, causing the race to be interrupted whilst it was dressed by officials.
Stuart Easton again got the better start of all his adversaries, instantaneously launching into the lead. Brookes followed suit in second, with Ellison and Camier originally third and fourth off the line. As the early stages of the race progressed, Camier managed to fight his way past Brookes and Ellison; however, the newly crowned champion went too fast into Abbey whilst trying to overtake Easton for the lead, resulting in him dropping down the order to ninth. This meant he had some work to do, but relished the challenge as ever and crawled his way back to second at the chequered flag.
Ellison eventually fought his way through to the front, from where he controlled the pace before taking the chequered flag in the best position. Brookes secured another podium finish, crossing the line third with Easton fourth and Tommy Hill fifth.
Commenting on his penultimate round achievements, an ecstatic Camier said: “I really don’t know what to make of it all to be honest, it is such a big moment for me to win the title. That was one of the hardest races of the season for me and there were some places that I was a bit out of control, which everyone could see, as I was pushing so hard. I tried a couple of passes but they just didn’t work but I knew I had to keep on trying. I need to thank everyone who has supported me and hopefully I can finish race two on a high with another win before we go to Oulton Park.
He added: “I knew I had to get a good start and get to the front and try and get into a rhythm but I made another mistake on the brakes so I have hopefully learnt from it this time around! There is certainly room for improvement with some of my overtaking moves as it took time to get by some of the other riders when I rejoined. It was great to see James win though and this has been an awesome weekend for the Airwaves Yamaha team and all of our sponsors. It has been a dream come true today and without doubt we will be celebrating tonight!”
The final round of the 2009 BSB Championship takes place at Oulton Park over the weekend of 9/10/11th October.
