Changes set for insurance database

Changes to the MID insurance database will come into force in 2011 in an attempt to clamp down on the number of uninsured motorists on Britain’s roads.

With uninsured motorists now costing an estimated £500m a year, changes to the motor insurance database (MID) will come into force in the New Year that will warn vehicle owners that they could be in breach of the law, before they are caught by police.

Under the new scheme, if there is no record on the MID showing your vehicle is insured, and you have not declared it as ‘off road’, you will receive a letter warning you that you could face a fine, prosecution, and the vehicle could also be clamped, seized and ultimately, destroyed.

The motor insurance database is used by all 52 police forces in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. More than 500 uninsured vehicles are seized every day and around 300,000 offenders are convicted for uninsured driving every year.

How does this affect Carole Nash customers?

All Carole Nash customers with a valid motorcycle insurance policy or any other form of motor insurance policy are registered on the MID database and there is no need for you to do anything. Your policies will resume as normal.

Motorists can check that their vehicle is registered on the motor insurance database by visiting www.askmid.com. In the unlikely event that your vehicle is not included in the database, contact your insurer who will make the necessary updates.

If your insurance has been cancelled or has lapsed and your vehicle has not been declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notice), you may receive a letter reminding you that your vehicle is uninsured. Vehicles that are declared SORN are unaffected.

Customers in the Republic of Ireland are unaffected by these changes.
