Checa crowned 2011 Champion
Carlos Checa was crowned 2011 World Superbike Champion at Magny Cours this afternoon, with a double victory to accompany his successes.
After long time leader Eugene Laverty abdicated his throne at teh head of the field, Checa launched an attack for provisional honours. As he swept passed the chequered flag to score his thirteenth victory of his campaign, the 2011 championship title became his, with nearest rival Marco Melandri unable to catch his opponent.
Despite missing out on the title crown, Melandri fought to second place with a charge on his Yamaha World Superbike machine. Meanwhile the final podium position was awarded to Leon Haslam, with the BMW Motorrad rider scoring a strong rostrum finish.
Leon Camier steered his Aprilia Alitalia machinery to fourth place, having narrowly missed out on a podium spot, whilst early leader Laverty eventually scored a fifth place finish. Sylvain Guintoli was the next rider to cross the finish line in sixth place, ahead of Noriyuki Haga and Joan Lascorz.
As just two places remained within the top ten, the fight was on to see who would secure the available positions. As the chequered flag ended any on-track disputes,Troy Corser led Tom Sykes towards the finish, with the pair finishing ninth and tenth respectively.
Already crowned champion, Checa added to his win tally in the second of today’s WSB races to score his 14th victory.
Again long time leader Laverty was dispersed from his perch as the race developed, however Checa was there to pick up the pieces. Forced to hold off a fierce charge from second placed Melandri, Checa swept passed the chequered flag first, whilst Laverty finished third, behind teammate Melandri.
Behind, Haslam again featured in the top positions, to score a fourth place finish ahead of the chasing Guintoli and Camier. A somewhat lengthy distance behind Camier, Lascorz battle to seventh place, inches ahead of Ayrton Badovini in eighth. WSB veteran Corser again made a top ten appearance, with a nith place finish, ahead of Haga in the final top ten spot.
The next and final round of the 2011 WSB championship takes place at the Portimao circuit in Portugal, on the 16th October. With the championship title already decided it will be an enjoyable season finale for Checa, as others fight for their position in the overall standings.
