Commuting makes up 54% of bike trips

More than half of all motorcycle journeys made last year were for commuting, new figures have revealed.

Statistics released by the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) claim that 54% of motorcycle and scooter journeys were made for the purpose of commuting to a permanent place of work, compared to just 34% of bicycle journeys and 22% of car journeys.

The MCI claimed that the findings “challenge the myth that motorcycle riders are a nuisance on the road and more interested in leisure pursuits than the day-to-day convenience of a powered two-wheeler”.

MCI says the findings also strengthen the case for motorcycling to take its place at the heart of transport policy as a practical form of commuting.

Already a number of initiatives exist to encourage motorcycle and scooter commuting, including the annual Ride to Work day, supported by employers and industry leaders from across the UK, including Carole Nash.

“Motorcycle and scooter riders are capitalising on the cost-effective, practical benefits of using a powered two-wheeler during some of the busiest times of the day,” said MCI spokesperson Sheila Rainger.

“It is important that the Government and employers recognise the contribution riders are making to ensure workers are getting to the office quicker and more cheaply than some of their colleagues. Cheaper parking, secure and covered parking and access to bus lanes are just some of the small steps that will improve a biker’s experience.”
