Honda World Supersport rider Craig Jones has tragically passed away this morning following a horrific crash at Brands Hatch on Sunday.
Jones crashed at Clarke Curve, the final corner before the start/finish straight during yesterday’s World Supersport event at the Kent circuit and appeared to be struck by another rider before coming to a halt in the middle of the track. He was aged just 23.
The race was immediately red-flagged by marshals to allow him to be treated at the side of the track before, after a brief examination at the circuit medical centre, being flown by Kent Air Ambulance to the Royal London Hospital.
Unfortunately despite intensive medical attention Jones died during the early hours of Sunday night due to severe head injuries.
In a statement released by Parkalgar Honda, Team Manager Simon Buckmaster said: “It is with great sadness that we learned Craig passed away in the early hours. The team’s thoughts are with Craig’s family and friends at this very difficult time. Craig’s family passes on its thanks to all well wishers.”
Jonathan Palmer, chief executive of MotorSport Vision which owns the Brands Hatch circuit, hailed the 2002 British Superstock winner and a former British Mini-Moto champion at both junior and senior level, as a “determined and professional” individual.
“I am so desperately sad that Craig died from the injuries he sustained at Brands Hatch yesterday,” he said.
“Britain has lost a wonderful rider whom I admired enormously and had every chance of being a future world champion.
“It is fitting that the abiding memory so many of us will have of Craig was him riding brilliantly, battling for the lead of an incredible race, in front of his home crowd.”
