Crutchlow on top at Portimao

Cal Crutchlow stormed to his first Superpole victory ahead of round two of the World Superbike Championship from Portimao this afternoon.

After proving his worth by ensuring he made it through to the final Superpole session the young Brit broke the previous lap record with a time of 1m42.092. Italian Max Biaggi will start alongside the Yamaha rider, after setting a time almost half a second adrift.

Carlos Checa recorded the third fastest time, and will be eager to show his pace in this second round of the 2010 season. Winner of the opening round Leon Haslam secured a fourth place start for tomorrow’s opening race, after setting the early pace, completing a four different bike line-up on the front row of the grid.

Fellow Brit Jonathan Rea will start from fifth tomorrow, setting a time of 1m42.807 on his Honda. Alongside him we will see Jakub Smrz, Shane Byrne, superbike veteran Troy Corser, Sylvain Guintoli and Ruben Xaus completing the top ten.

World Superbike rookie Leon Camier will line-up eleventh for the first of tomorrow’s races with Tom Sykes twelfth. Series returnee James Toseland suffered a difficult session, only managing fifteenth place after still suffering with some pain in his previously injured hand, while regular championship contenders Michel Fabrizio and Noriyuki Haga qualified seventh and eighteenth, respectively.

Australian Chris Vermeulen has been deemed fit to race tomorrow by doctors, after struggling with his fitness following a crash in the season opener at Phillip Island. Despite sitting out of free practice he is determined to be on the grid for tomorrow’s Portimao showdown.

The first of tomorrow’s races is shaping up to be another exciting opener. Will we be seeing another new winner crowned in the series? We’ll soon find out.
