De Puniet suffers ankle break

LCR Honda rider Randy de Puniet has suffered from a broken ankle during a motocross accident at the weekend, it has been confirmed.

The Frenchman, who celebrated his first ever MotoGP podium at Donington Park last week, was involved in a motocross accident on Saturday as part of his training programme during the summer break.

Tests later confirmed that de Puniet has fractured his left ankle, requiring him to undergo surgery to insert a screw and although it is not believed that the injury will keep him out of the Czech Grand Prix in Brno on Sunday week, the 28 will still meet with Clinica Mobile staff over the next few days to assess his fitness.

“Yves and I planned a specific training programme to improve my performance on track this year,” said de Puniet. “This programme helped me a lot so far and, through the summer break, I could not stop training for two weeks’ time. That’s why we went out to make a short motocross training [programme].

“Unfortunately I had a fall and the impact on the ground caused me the fracture of the left ankle.

“I am very disappointed for this inconvenience but training is very important for me to be well fitted on track,” he added. “[I] will do my best to race in Brno and I am sure that the Clinica Mobile staff will support me in the best way”.
