Derbyshire cuts bike accidents
A campaign in Derbyshire has successfully reduced serious motorcycle crashes by 40% during the summer of 2010, figures have revealed.
A high-profile campaign, aimed predominantly at bikers, by the Derbyshire road safety partnership saw just 69 recorded incidents between April and September 2010 – a reduction of 46 on the same period in 2009.
Around 20,000 motorcycle riders were given a safety guide as part of the campaign, which was supported in the local media and by speed camera patrols.
The campaign comes after a study released in July found that Derbyshire was home to five of the country’s ten most dangerous roads, including the A537 ‘Cat & Fiddle’ road between Macclesfield and Buxton.
“This campaign is a good example of how the organisations responsible for cutting road deaths and injuries in Derbyshire can work together,” said Chief Inspector Steve Wilson, head of roads policing at Derbyshire Police.
“The road safety partnership allows us to coordinate our efforts and ensure that we’re using the right combination of publicity, training, policing and road improvements.”
