Dorna push for Hungarian GP
MotoGP looks set to be heading back to Hungary following the unveiling of a proposed new circuit.
Officials from Dorna S.L were present at the launch of the new Balatonring circuit to be build near the city of Savloy, around 100km from Budapest and have confirmed that they have made an official proposal to the FIM over holding a Grand Prix at the new facility.
A statement on the MotoGP website read: “MotoGP rights holders Dorna Sports S.L. have made a proposal to the FIM for the inclusion of a Hungarian Grand Prix event on the 2009 World Championship calendar.
“An announcement of the construction of the Balatonring circuit in the Eastern European country -and its possible inclusion as one of next year´s tracks- was made at the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus in Budapest on Wednesday morning. ”
Rumours had circulated for several months that Hungary was being put forward as a potential venue for 2009 to replace the Chinese Grand Prix which has suffered from poor support since its inception in 2005.
The Eastern European nations retains a strong interest in motorcycle racing, despite only ever staging two Grand Prix’s in the country – both at the Hungaroring in 1990 and 1992.
The success of Gabor Talmacsi in the 2007 season reignited interest in motorcycle racing in the country which World Championship events in the nation and the Grand Prix in neighboring Hungary are the most highly attended in the season.
