Ducati Hypermotard 796 at NEC show
Ducati have scaled back their presence at the Carole Nash International Motorcycle Show, due to open on 27th November 2009.
Instead of the usual stand with the current range on display, there will be just two bikes on show from Ducati, the new Multistrada 1200 and Hypermotard 796. The Hypermotard is a smaller brother to the 1100, but is much more than just a sleeved-down version of an existing model.
A new V-twin engine, with two valves per cylinder and making a claimed 81bhp will power the new 796. It will also offer a typical V-twin punch at low rpm and a torquey delivery to make riding in everyday traffic that bit more relaxing. Ducati are claiming that the motor will be capable of returning 58mpg fuel consumption too, which is handy as UK pump prices continue to rise.
The chassis is lighter than the 1100 Hypermotard too, with a revised frame responsible for most of the weight saving. The new all-rounder Hypermotard 796 has a claimed dry weight of just 167Kgs, which is respectably low for an 800cc class twin.
On the downside, the new 796 has a slightly lower seat than the 1100, but it remains a lofty 32.5 inches above ground – too tall for many riders. The new Ducati also has handlebar-end mounted mirrors, which are more vulnerable to damage in traffic, as they stick out that little bit more.
The 796 is decent value, with a suggested UK retail proce of £6995 on the road. More at; www.ducati.com
