Electric MX bike beats petrol rivals
The Zero MX electric bike has won a race at Gironville in France, beating not only the other four electric machines in its class, but all the petrol powered competitors as well.
“This was quite an event,” commented Edwin Belonje, Director of Zero Motorcycle’s European Sales and Marketing, “and we really rushed to get ready for the race with just two weeks notice. Thomas Aubry was our rider in this, our first ever European off-road event. It was wonderful to win, and beat the petrol powered machines too. We are hoping to do more racing in Europe with the Zero MX as electric motorcycles continue to evolve.”
The Zero MX is made in the USA and features a lightweight chassis, a custom rear shock and beefy front forks to make it a credible off-road race bike or enduro tool. The bike is available in Supermoto trim as well. The Zero is powered by a near silent electric motor, which prevents many of the noise complaints associated with off-road competition, especially those involving two-strokes.
Like many electric machines, the Zero MX isn’t cheap, it retails at £6590 in the UK. But with an electric bikes only TT race on the cards for 2010, plus more electric off-road races planned by the French Federation, it seems likely that these machines will form a significant part of motorcycle sport in the future.
