Fiat Yamaha head to Valencia for Rossi’s farewell

The eighteenth race of the MotoGP season will take place at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia this coming weekend and with the Triple Crown of Riders’, Teams’ and Manufacturers’ titles already decided in Estoril last weekend, the final race is a matter of pride and glory for the Fiat Yamaha team.

Jorge Lorenzo will return to his home country on a high after being crowned World Champion, while Valentino Rossi will say an emotional farewell to Yamaha, who he has been racing with for seven years, picking up four World Champion titles along the way.

Although he has already won the World Champion title, it doesn’t mean that Lorenzo won’t be fighting to take home one last win in front of his home crowd. He’s had a fantastic season with seven poles, eight race wins and has only had two non-podium finishes in the entire season, which has left him with a whopping amount of points, setting him on course to overtake the current record of 373 points earned in one season. However, Lorenzo has yet to win a race at Valencia, so it will be a major achievement if he can complete a hat trick of Spanish wins this Sunday.

Lorenzo said: “It has been an incredible season for us and I was so happy to win again last weekend. We have won the Triple Crown now so our targets are complete, but I would like to make a new points record, which I can do if I finish on the podium. I have never won in Valencia so I would really like to try this weekend.”

Valentino Rossi will be making an emotional farewell to his team, Yamaha, with whom he has picked up 46 race wins and four World Championships over the past seven years. Previously, Rossi has had good form at the Valencia track with six podium finishes and two wins throughout his career and if he finishes on the podium, it will be a fantastic end to his spectacular Yamaha career, especially given his injury prone run this season.

31-year-old Rossi said: “So here we are, my last race with Yamaha and it will be an emotional weekend for all! Of course I would really like to try to win this final race because it would be a great end to this partnership, which has had so many beautiful moments.”

“Anyway this is a special weekend so we will do everything that we can. I am third in the championship after Estoril and second is not impossible, although we know Dani is strong in Valencia and he is still 19 points ahead.” he added.

The final race of the Championship takes place this Sunday and will go ahead in front of more than 130,000 racing fans.
