Fundraising target in sight

The fundraising finishing post is in sight for the warm-hearted staff at Carole Nash, who have collected 85% of their £15,000 target in aid of national charity BASIC – the Brain and Spinal Injuries Centre.

So far, £13,000 has been raised in aid of the charity, which is hoping to build a specialist gym to help people recover from serious spinal injuries. The money will help to equip the gym with specialist equipment, such as cardio-vascular apparatus, to speed the recovery of patients.

The gym will be sited at BASIC’s dedicated facility in Salford, Greater Manchester, just a few miles from Carole Nash’s UK headquarters in Altrincham, and will complement its existing services including counselling, therapy, outreach work and advice for people recovering from a severe head or spinal injury.

Founded in 1986 by Bolton businessman Derek Gaskell and affiliated to the Greater Manchester Clinical Neuroscience Centre, BASIC supports people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury or neurological diagnosis, as well as providing assistance for those who have suffered a brain haemorrhage, tumour and other brain-related conditions such as stroke and brain cancer.

Carole Nash’s fundraising efforts have been led from the top with chief executive David Newman raising nearly £9,000 when he undertook an Arctic challenge to the North Pole last April. David braved furious storms, fast drifting ice and biting 60mph winds as he skied across unforgiving Arctic terrain towards the North Pole in aid of the charity. Other staff fundraising initiatives have included taking part in the Manchester to Blackpool cycle ride and Great North Run.

Asked why he undertook such a gruelling challenge David said: “I and my colleagues have visited the Centre a number of times and seen firsthand the brilliant and varied work it does. I was already planning to take on the Arctic project as a testing personal challenge and saw an opportunity to simultaneously raise vital money to fund a much needed facility. I’m immensely proud to be able to support such a worthwhile cause and one which is close to the hearts of many here at Carole Nash.”

Now David and his Carole Nash colleagues are urging the public to support the cause by donating to BASIC via David’s justgiving page. “We’re so close to hitting that all important target and it would be great if bikers and other members of the public could make a donation, no matter how small to help us on our way,” said David. “Every penny counts and could help make a real difference to people whose lives have been affected by a serious spinal injury.”
