Harley ends sidecar production
Harley-Davidson has announced that it will be discontinuing the production of sidecars, bringing an end to 96 years of offering a third wheel.
The American manufacturer has confirmed that it will no longer be offering a sidecar as an optional extra for any of its models with immediate effect, with production of sidecars ceasing completely in early 2011.
The company, which cited falling demand for the decision, has offered a sidecar option since 1914 but orders have fallen dramatically since the introduction of Tri-Glide family of trikes.
The decision also comes as the troubled manufacturer continues to restructure its business in light of the economic recession. Harley has already announced plans to lay off up to 2,800 staff and relocate its largest of three plants in York, Pennsylvania.
All existing orders for sidecars will be honoured and Harley-Davidson will continue to support its dealer network and support for sidecar owners’ warranties as well as supply service parts and technical support.
