Harley launch new Forty-Eight

Harley-Davidson has announced the latest edition to its Dark Custom hot-rod Sportster range with the launch of the new Forty-Eight.

Featuring lower suspension and the classic 2.1-gallon “peanut” fuel tank, Harley claims that the Forty-Eight “backs up its bulldog appearance with the performance of its blacked out and polished rubber-mounted Evolution® 1200 cc V-Twin engine.” The low solo seat, under-mounted mirrors, side mount license plate, clean rear fender and tall and fat front tire emphasize the Forty Eight’s focus on chiseled customization.

The Forty-Eight will line up alongside the company’s other models in the Dark Custom arrange, including include the Nightster, Iron 883, Cross Bones, Fat Bob and Street Bob.

“With its classic bulldog shoulders stance, the Forty-Eight strikes a distinctive look and low profile that could only come from Harley-Davidson,” said Ray Drea, Harley-Davidson Senior Director of Styling. “The Forty-Eight model has a collective past life experience and broken-in look that is raw and authentic.”

No UK prices are available as of yet but the Forty-Eight will be in US dealers with a price tag of $10,499 in ‘Vivid Black’. Other colours include ‘Brilliant Silver’ and ‘Mirage Orange Pearl’.

The announcement of the model comes in the week that Harley-Davidson announced a loss of $219m (£135.3m) loss for the fourth quarter of 2009 – the company’s quarterly loss for more than 16 years. The loss was blamed on restructuring costs incurred by the company as a result of wholesale redundancies in the US, factory closures and the closing of subsidiary brand Buell.
