Harley recalls 111,569 models

Harley-Davidson has issued a safety recall for 111,569 touring models after discovering a potentially fatal flaw with a fuel tank mounting.

The recall, which has only been issued to US customers at present, will see as many as 111,569 motorcycles require urgent repair’s at the manufacturer’s expense, providing yet another headache for the company.

Harley-Davidson are already in the process of making sweeping cuts in light of the economic recession, with production scaled down and jobs cut at its primary factory in Wisconsin.

A safety directive issued to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in America read:

“Harley-Davidson is recalling certain model year 2009 and 2010 touring family motorcycles, including CVO, touring and trike products, manufactured from Juns 6, 2008 through to November 19, 2009. The front fuel tank mounts may distort in reaction to severe frame damage from a frontal collision. This condition may cause a fuel leak at the weld of the front bracket to the tunnel.”

The directive also stated that “a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire, which could lead to injury or death to the rider.”

Under the recall, customers in the US will be able to take their bike to their local Harley Davidson dealer where a bracing kit for the fuel tank will be fitted at no cost to the customer.
