Haslam determined to put up a fight at Brno

Leon Haslam has said that he will fight to peg back some points at the Brno round of the World Superbike Championship this weekend, to try and close the points gap between him and current leader Max Biaggi.

Haslam could have a challenge on his hands however, as Brno is one of Biaggi’s favourite tracks and last year he won a race on his Aprilia RSV4 at the Czech track.

Biaggi is currently 37 points head in the race for the championship but Haslam is hoping to close that gap with a win at the Brno track this weekend, which would help make the championship title more attainable.

Haslam said: “I like Brno circuit because it has a bit of everything really. There are a lot of ups and downs, it is a challenging track to ride and one that requires a good bike set-up.”

He added: “Max (Biaggi) is obviously the rider to beat at the moment because he and his bike are working really well together. But, I am going to fight all the way this weekend and hopefully claw back some of the points.”

The Suzuki Alstare has been suffering with an elbow injury sustained at Miller Motorsports Park after a tumble from his Suzuki, requiring stitches but he has been adamant that this wouldn’t affect his efforts to regain ground on Biaggi and then last week he suffered a more unusual injury in testing at Imola.

Haslam said: “It has been very hectic recently because after the San Marino race, we had a two day test in Imola and then the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Unfortunately I had a couple of get-offs at Imola and bashed a delicate area of my body, but it will not affect me on the bike.

“I’m fit and ready to battle Brno and Max and want to start my summer holiday with some more podiums.”

Haslam is currently second in the championship race with Carlos Checa in third place, who will be looking to achieve his fifth podium in the upcoming race. Brno kicks off this Friday with the first practice session at 12:45pm.
