Haslam to stay with BMW for 2012

Leon Haslam has announced that he’ll be staying with BMW Motorrad for the World Superbike Championship in 2012 and has extended his current contract.

The British rider made the move to BMW for the 2011 season from Suzuki, after finishing as runner-up to Max Biaggi in 2010, riding a Suzuki Alstare. BMW is the third manufacturer Haslam’s ridden with in as many seasons, after making his WSB debut for Stiggy Honda back in 2009.

There were high hopes for the 28-year-old to become a major title contender for BMW, but it hasn’t quite turned out that way so far. Nevertheless, he’s claimed two podiums and stands in a firm fifth place, having ridden impressively on his S1000RR, and there are three rounds of the championship still remaining.

Haslam said of his extended contract; “I am really happy to continue the relationship with BMW Motorrad, and I have full faith in the project. I cannot wait for the next year to start and to fight for the World Championship again. Now I can fully focus on the final three rounds of the 2011 season. I am optimistic to finish the year on a high.”

BMW’s Motorsport Director, Bernhard Gobmeier, is delighted to have him back on board for 2012, adding: “We’re delighted to be working with Leon again next season. Leon has impressed us from day one. We value and share his ambition, passion and absolute will to win. I’m in no doubt that we’ll be able to achieve our goals together.”

The BMW team is also due to get a new rider, as Troy Corser is leaving but BMW have yet to announce their latest addition, however, rumour has it that Marco Melandri has been linked with the position.
