Hat Trick for Lorenzo at Catalunya
Jorge Lorenzo has scored a hat trick at the Catalunya track this weekend after he was victorious at the Spanish race, his fifth win of the season and third in a row.
He now stands an impressive 52 points ahead of fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa in the MotoGP Championship race, whilst his teammate Valentino Rossi fell to seventh place after missing four races due to injury.
Lorenzo started in poll position but lost ground to Pedrosa in the first turn, but managed to pull into the lead again after his fellow Spaniard ran wide. The first few laps saw some fierce competition as riders Andrea Dovizioso and Casey Stoner followed closely in pursuit of the Fiat Yamaha rider.
Stoner ran off track in lap six but Dovizioso was relentless in his pursuit until he too crashed out ten laps before the end of the race, leaving his closest rival Pedrosa two seconds behind.
The 23-year-old rider became the first rider since Eddie Lawson to win three top class races in a row, from pole position.
Lorenzo said: “It was a very difficult race, very hot, and very tiring. The tyres were a real problem,”
“Andrea (Dovizioso) was pushing hard and I thought it was going to be like that all the way but he fell which made it easier,” he added.
Lorenzo now leads the championship race with 165 points, with Pedrosa 52 points behind in second place and Italian Dovizioso in third place with 91 points. Lorenzo has dominated the championship race this season ever since his teammate Rossi was ruled out because of an injury during practice at the Italian Grand Prix and has won five out of the seven races so far.
