Honda Decision will not affect the British Superbike Team

Neil Tuxworth, the head of Honda Racing has announced that the British Superbike team will not be affected by Honda’s Formula 1 decision. Honda announced its decision to withdraw from Formula One in 2009 unless a buyer for the team is found by the end of December. The decision by the Japanese company who have been involved in Formula 1 for the past 9 years is a further example of the way in which the global economic crisis is affecting all sectors including sport.

The decision provides further ammunition for those who are concerned for the future of the multi-million pound sport which is struggling to maintain itself during the difficult economic times. The future of many players is uncertain and so too is the position of those who hold jobs at Brackley near the Silverstone circuit, amounting to nearly 600 people who have been warned that job losses are possible. Australian group Red Bull, the main sponsors of two Formula One teams said that they were ‘not surprised’ that Honda have withdrawn from Formula One.

Despite the turbulent economic conditions that have certainly affected Honda, Neil Tuxworth has assured fans that no effect will be felt by the British Superbike team. The team, who have been competing in BSB since 2003 are secure and will continue to race in 2009.

Tuxworth explained that, although run under the same brand, car and motorcycle racing do not run under the same division and therefore no effect will be felt on the motorcycling side.
