Honda to produce an electric motorcycle
Honda has released details of a plan to bring an electric motorcycle to the consumer market in two years time. Honda’s CEO, Takeo Fukui has highlighted the importance of the motorcycle within the Honda business and announced plans to have production begin on the battery powered motorcycle.
Fukui’s year-end speech put an emphasis on the importance of the motorcycle as a strength not only for the Honda business but also for consumers in general during these trying financial times. He recognised the motorcycle as an important mode of transportation for the consumer, saying that a motorcycle has an ‘easy to own/easy to use efficiency’. The battery-powered motorcycle should add a further dimension to this ease of use, as a green mode of transport that emits no CO₂. As a vehicle that is generally used for short journeys, it is the perfect vehicle to test the application of battery technology.
The development of battery technology which will subsequently lead to the creation of this e-bike may signal a change in the way that transportation is developed. If the battery powered motorcycle becomes successful, perhaps this will lead to a transfer of the technology to new, greener forms of transport.
