H&W sells for $161,000 in Vegas
A rare 1894/1895 Hildebrand & Wolfmüller sold for $161,000 at the Bonham’s auction in Las Vegas at the weekend – $11,000 more than expected.
The Hildebrand & Wolfmüller, the first ever powered motorcycle to enter into production was widely expected to be the main attraction at Bonham’s first ever motorcycle auction in Las Vegas and that proved to be the case, attracting a bid of $161,000 (£104,000) Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino.
In total, more than $2.5m was raised from the sale of 291 lots, with six lots going for six-figure sums.
A 1901 Indian F Head Single ‘Camel Back’, one of the earliest Indian motorcycles ever built, went for a cool $133,500.
Lot 211, a 1929 Harley-Davidson 21ci Peashooter ex factory race bike, went as expected for $125,800 whilst a 1916 Excelsior “Big Valve X” Board-Tracker fell just short of its $140,000 guide price, selling in the end for $117,000.
Another big attraction was a rare, factory prepared competition unit, ex-Rody Rodenberg 1939 BMW R51RS, selling for $130,200.
The pre-war motorcycle, one of only three remaining from an original production of 17 (one of which is in the BMW museum), is the only one in existence that has not been restored.
Of the original 17 built, only three remain, one of which is in the BMW museum. This is the only one that has not been restored.
