Lorenzo extends lead with third win
Pole sitter Jorge Lorenzo showed his dominance at Silverstone this afternoon for the British MotoGP event, taking the chequered flag in fine style.
After getting the early as the field roared away from the grid, Lorenzo soon came under pressure from second place starter Dani Pedrosa. The Spaniard, hot on the tail of the Fiat Yamaha rider, managed to work his way through for the lead, as the dup swapped positions during the opening lap.
Behind, Randy De Puniet, Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden were enjoying a strong battle, whilst Hayden’s Ducati teammate, Casey Stoner dropped to the back of the field.
Once back in control of the race, Lorenzo soon opened out a substantial gap back to his rivals, as he disappeared into the distance. By the half-way stage, Ben Spies had locked onto the back of the podium battle, whilst up ahead Dovizioso, De Puniet and Hayden battled it out for second.
With the top few holding much of the attention, heads soon turned further down the field, as Casey Stoner, now on a recovery ride, was setting lap times that were rivalling the race leader.
By the time the returning MotoGP race at Silverstone came to and end, it was Lorenzo who crossed the line to take his third victory of the season by 6.743 seconds, also extending his championship lead. Dovizioso fought off tough advances from his rivals to hold onto second, whilst Spies battled his way into a podium position, taking his first podium finish in MotoGP.
Hayden just missed out in fourth place, whilst his teammate Stoner fought back to fifth. De Puniet was demoted to sixth by the charging Australian, with Marco Simoncelli seventh and Pedrosa in eighth after slipping backwards.
The remainder of the top ten saw Colin Edwards jump up to ninth, with Aleix Espargaro just behind in tenth. Simoncelli’s teammate, Marco Melandri, crashed out on the opening lap, ending his race immediately.
Lorenzo said: “This was an important day for me and an important win, because I felt so strong and I enjoyed riding my Yamaha so much. I had a different feeling today; I felt that it was going to be a good race.
“I never dreamt of taking three wins from five races but here we are and I am feeling very strong mentally at this moment. I want to thank my team, Yamaha and Bridgestone for this victory,” he added.
The next round of the 2010 MotoGP championship will take place on 25-26th June, at Assen. Lorenzo will arrive at the Netherlands based circuit with a thirty-seven point lead over Dovizioso, and will be looking to keep the advantage.
