Marquez breaks Rossi record after win at Catalunya
Marc Márquez has shown off his talent once again with a fantastic fourth win at Catalunya , breaking the record previously held by Valentino Rossi.
The 17-year-old Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider won the 125cc 125cc Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya at the weekend. He is the youngest rider to have taken three consecutive poles in Moto GP racing, taking the title from Moto GP favourite Valentino Rossi.
The young rider sparked off his winning streak with a debut win in Italy, having never won a World Championship GP prior to the fourth round at Mugello. The Spanish rider followed up his debut win with victories in the past four races, including the event at Catalunya in front of his home crowd.
After his win on Sunday, he became the youngest ever rider to win four back-to-back races and broke the record set once again by the legendary Italian rider Rossi.
Márquez said: “We didn’t expect it because the circuit is difficult, but on the first lap I had a good level of confidence on the bike and then I tried to push,”
“I saw from my pit box that the time gap was increasing to second position, so I knew we could expect the race a bit by then.”
The Spaniard added: “This is a great moment – four wins is great but we will see in Germany if it continues, and I have to say thanks to the team, Red Bull and Repsol. They are working really hard.”
After his recent winning streak, his fourth victory put him at the top of the Championship standings and he is now one point ahead of rival Pol Espargaró.
Márquez went on: “This gives me great confidence. I’ve never been at the top of the World Championship before but this year is now a good opportunity I think,”
