Mid-Wales test centre scrapped
The DSA has revealed that it has scrapped plans to open a new motorcycle test centre in Haverfordwest, reports Alastair Walker, after local opposition to the planning application. MAG ( Motorcycle Action Group ) has criticised the DSA’s slow progress on establishing test centres in Wales, with just three operational so far.
The existing centres are located near the edge of the country; Bangor, Swansea and Newport. This leaves a huge geographical area in the middle which has no motorcycle test centre. The DSA say that there is `low demand’ from Mid-Wales, but MAG say that the lack of a test centre puts people off motorcycling full stop, therefore there is reduced demand.
Welsh Assembly member Mark Williams is to meet the DSA this week to discuss the situation, which attracted the attention of PM Gordon Brown recently, when he stated the government wanted to include motorcycles in the overall transport mix. A learner rider who lived in say Brecon or Builth Wells may face a four hour round trip simply to take a motorcycle test.
