Moto GP cost cutting suggested by Gresini

Honda’s Moto GP team manager, Gresini has suggested that Moto GP follow the lead of F1 in cutting costs in 2009. Although Moto GP has suffered no team losses which have caused a significant shockwave through F1 and the World Rally Championship, Gresini believes that cost cutting is necessary within Moto GP too.

Gresini voiced his views to the Gazetta della Sporto, claiming that it is imperative that action is taken now rather than leave it until it is too late. Due to current economic conditions and the way in which F1 have made significant cuts to their spending, Gresini believes that Moto GP should follow suit.

Commenting on these necessary cuts, Gresini told the Gazetta della Sporto: “If F1 felt the need to find some limitations, then we must do that too. We can’t wait until the crisis becomes too bad before thinking of some measures, also because little can be done for 2009. We must talk and try to think which way to go.”

In order to cut costs, Gresini proposed a number of changes, these suggestions included moving away from using carbon brakes and supplementing them with steel brakes; considerably reducing costs. Further suggestions such as cutting down the amount of spare bikes, where one bike would be used for two riders in case of a failure or crash would reduce costs in transportation weight and technicians. A significant way in which costs would be cut would be by looking at the development of existing bikes rather than creating new bikes; efforts would be put into prolonging engine life of existing bikes.
