MotoGP gets HD coverage for 2010
MotoGP will be broadcast in high definition at least 16 countries during 2010 but as of yet, the UK, Italy and Spain are not yet among them, Dorna has confirmed.
The championship’s promoter Dorna Sports has confirmed that after successful trials last season, all eighteen rounds of the MotoGP championship will be screened in full HD coverage, with broadcasters from 14 countries and regions already signed up.
Those territories include Belgium, France, Portugal, Hungary, the USA, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, with HD coverage also available across Scandanavia, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Surprisingly, key MotoGP markets including the UK, Italy, Germany and Spain are not yet included on the list although Dorna claimed that further broadcasters will be signed up before the season commences.
The BBC won exclusive rights to live MotoGP coverage in the UK, taking over from British Eurosport in 2008 in a decision that was largely unpopular with British fans. Complaints about the BBC’s coverage of the sport have continued, focusing particularly on the coverage of qualifying and the support classes being shown only on the BBCi “red button” service and online.
Dorna have also confirmed that a full 3D production will also take place this season, with the filming of a documentary to be screened later this year. Channels including BSkyB and ESPN have reportedly shown an interest in the documentary, which will be led by John Bruno, who was part of the Visual Effects team involved in the Academy Award winning film, Avatar.
