MotoGP may return to Argentina in 2013
MotoGP looks set to return to Argentina in 2013, after an agreement was signed by the government of Argentina, the Governor of the Santiago del Estero province, OSD and sponsor Dorna Sports, securing Argentina a place on the MotoGP World Championship circuit.
The announcement comes shortly after news spread that the Sachsenring circuit in Germany had been dropped from the MotoGP calendar.
The chosen Argentinean circuit is the Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo, based in the Santiago del Estero province, which will play host to the MotoGP event for at least three seasons, but the agreement is subject to certain renovations that Dorna have deemed as ‘necessary’. The reason for this restoration is to bring the track up to MotoGP safety standards before allowing any races to go ahead.
The official motogp.com website broke the news, adding that the deal was signed in Paris, in the presence of the Argentinean president, Cristina Fernandez as well as the CEO of Dorna, Carmelo Ezpeleta.
Argentina last hosted a MotoGP event back in 1999, with the 500cc category race being won by American rider, Kenny Roberts Jr.
