Motorbikes in Bus Lanes
In a move that will please many riders in London, Boris Johnson is finally allowing bikes to ride in bus lanes from 5th January 2009. Despite protests by the London Cycling Campaign, the Lord Mayor of London has honoured his promise and will allow riders into bus lanes that are currently used by cyclists, buses and taxis.
The move should see journey times for riders cut significantly and furthermore may reduce the amount of collisions seen on the roads where the rule will be enforced. When discussing the move with the BMF in February, Mr Johnson said: “Allowing motorcycles into bus lanes would ease congestion and increase traffic speed”.
The rule will apply to red route bus lanes which are controlled by Transport for London but not borough roads. 180 miles of bus lanes in London will now be used by motorcycles as well as buses, cyclists and taxis. This rule will be enforced for a trial period of 18 months before being reviewed and hopefully, for many riders, enforced permanently.
The changes are likely to promote a positive image for motorcyclists, who are already exempt from the hefty London congestion charge and will now be able to significantly cut journey times in the capital.
