Oulton BSB; Sykes wins Race 1

Suzuki rider Tom Sykes won the opening race at today’s blustery Oulton Park round of British Superbikes.

Yorkshireman Sykes fought hard early in the race with James Ellison, with Ellison taking the lead on his Honda, before Sykes overtook on lap seven and eased away.

Much fancied race winner Shakey Byrne was further back in the pack on his Ducati, but charging hard. Byrne then had a slow speed collision with Karl Harris, which saw Harris fall off and retire, but Byrne recovered to eventually close down the leaders and take third place away from Leon Haslam, who passed the chequered flag in 4th.

Simon Andrews finished 5th, Cal Crutchlow 6th and Mike Rutter in 7th spot. insidebikes.com blogger Howie Mainwaring posted a DNF, alongside Guy Martin and Chris Burns on the MV Agusta.

Race 2 results posted later today.
