Pedrosa faces hand surgery
Dani Pedrosa is to undergo surgery in Barcelona this evening following his crash at Losail on Monday night, doctors have confirmed.
The Repsol Honda rider was forced to sit out day three of the official MotoGP test in Qatar and fly back to Barcelona after a highside accident on day two of the night test.
Whilst no breakages were found upon later inspection at a Qatari medical centre, concerns were raised over existing conditions to his left hand, broken in Germany last year, and knee, which required surgery after a fall at Phillip Island. Those fears forced him to return to Spain for further tests on Tuesday where further scans have revealed a fracture in his left radius bone.
A titanium screw will be inserted into this area during an operation scheduled later today (Wednesday) and he will also receive a small skin graft on his knee, where the previous surgery wound had reopened as a result of Monday’s crash.
The operation is likely to force the Spaniard to miss at least some of the final pre-season test at Jerez in two weeks time, typifying a difficult winter for the Spaniard. After pulling out of the final day at Sepang last month due to knee pain and being one of a number of riders who sat out the weather-affected first night in Qatar, Pedrosa has only completed two and a half days of 2009 testing in this off season.
