Pedrosa back on top

Dani Pedrosa stormed to his third win of the season at Indianapolis today, to reduce the points gap to championship leader Jorge Lorenzo.

After starting on the second row of the grid, Pedrosa powered through to the front, when a fastest lap lead him to second place. After shadowing pole sitter Ben Spies for the first few laps, Pedrosa made his move for the lead on lap seven, from where he never looked back.

Despite starting on the front row of the grid, Lorenzo dropped to fifth during the opening laps, however he managed to claw his way back to third, gaining another strong finish. This marked an unusual occasion for the championship leader, with this being the first time all season he has finished out of the top two, however it hasn’t dampened his title hopes.

Valentino Rossi fought through to a fourth place finish after starting seventh, having made the best of a difficult weekend. Fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso crossesd the line in fifth, just behind Rossi. After starting on the front row of the grid for today’s race Nicky Hayden dropped to sixth place at home, to give the American fans something extra to celebrate.

The bottom half of the top ten saw Marco Simoncelli soar to seventh place, while Alvaro Bautista finished eighth. The final two spots in the top ten were filled by Aleix Espargaro and Hector Barbera, with the duo finishing ninth and tenth, respectively.

With a number of riders falling by the wayside the remaining three finishing positions were awarded to Loris Capirossi in eleventh, Hiroshi Aoyama twelfth and Randy De Puniet thirteenth. Mika Kallio, Colin Edwards, Casey Stoner and Marco Melandri were all forced into retirement, with various incidents and issues ending their respective races.

Lorenzo is now sixty-eight points clear at the top of the championship standings, with 251 points to Pedrosa’s 183 points. Dovizioso is third in the points table, with Stoner fourth and Rossi fifth, despite missing a few rounds due to a broken leg.
