Rea wins final Superpole of 2011

Jonathan Rea scored his second successive Superpole victory at Portimao this afternoon, as the World Superbike Championship season finale got underway.

A strong end to the season for the Castrol Honda rider has seen him once again edge out his rivals to take the top spot after a tough Superpole session, with a quickest time of 1m41.712 seconds, also a new best lap for the British rider.

Newly crowned 2011 Champion Carlos Checa slotted into second place ahead of tomorrow’s first race. Eugene Laverty will join the top two on the front rwo of the grid, with his Yamaha World Superbike teammate Marco Melandri alongside in fourth.

Sylvain Guintoli will head the second row of the grid for tomorrow’s opening adventure, on his Effenbert-Liberty Ducati machine, alongside his teammate Jakob Smrz in sixth. Joan Lascorz recorded the seventh fastest time, to edge out Noriyuki Haga for the privilege. Ayrton Badovini and Tom Sykes will complete the top ten for the first race tomorrow on their respective machines.
