Record lap sees Stoner on pole

Casey Stoner will start on pole position for Sunday’s British Grand Prix after smashing the Silverstone lap record.

The Repsol Honda rider set a new record lap time of 2:02.020 in qualifying, making him more than a second faster than last year’s pole position time set by Jorge Lorenzo.

Marco Simoncelli will line up alongside Stoner after lapping a time of 2:02.208, with Lorenzo completing the front row.

But for the majority of the crowd, qualifying was overshadowed by Cal Crutchlow’s high-side crash which let the British rider with a broken collarbone and a mild concussion. He will now miss Sunday’s race and is a doubt for the Dutch TT at Assen in a fortnight’s time.

Ben Spies and Andrea Dovizioso will start on the second row of the grid, as will Karel Abraham, who was the surprise performance of the session with a time of 2:04.1551.
