Redding makes history
Scott Redding became the youngest ever winner of a Grand Prix event with victory in the 125 event at Donington Park on Sunday.
The Gloucestershire-born ride, aged at just 15 years and 170 days, took the chequered flag on his home circuit to become the first British 125 winner since Chaz Mortimer in 1973 – ending a run of 451 races without a victory for British riders.
In a dramatic finish, Redding pressured race leader Andrea Iannone into a mistake at Craner Curve with just six laps remaining and kept his composure to hold on to the lead ahead of championship leader Mike Du Meglio and Marc Marquez.
Redding, who secured his first victory in only his eighth race, told BBC Sport: “It is unbelievable. I’ve never had a podium before and to win at my home grand prix is an incredible feeling.
“It was difficult conditions out there but I’ve always ridden well when it’s been windy and the bike felt good.
“When Iannone crashed out I knew that I had the race won and just had to focus and bring it home.
“I’d only ever done three laps of Donington before and that was on an 80cc bike in the rain four years ago.
“But to win in front of the British fans is a dream come true. I wasn’t allowed any champagne on the podium because I’m too young but luckily Mike gave me some of his.
“I should be back at school tomorrow but I am off to Assen for the next race, and hopefully I can get another podium soon.”
Fellow Britain Bradley Smith finished in tenth position, the 17 year-old’s fourth top ten finish this season.
