Remarkable Recovery for Chris…

Most riders who have a motorcycle stolen after leaving a key in the ignition would stand little chance of ever seeing it again. But when a crook rode away on Chris Steytler’s Yamaha WR125X, he was able to track every move made on his pride and joy, thanks to Bike Trac.

The day his bike was taken, Chris, who works near London’s fashionable Spitalfields Market, parked up and headed to the office as usual. He had no idea anything was wrong until he was unable to find his keys at the end of the day – his worst fears were confirmed when he returned to his parking spot and found it empty.

After calling the police, Chris was able to do something few theft victims can. He logged onto the internet to find the exact time his motorcycle had been snatched. Chris had fitted his Yamaha with Bike Trac – a pioneering Thatcham approved device from Road Angel – before he even wheeled it out of the showroom. The discreet, state-of-the-art, GPS-enabled security device tracks a bike wherever it goes. If a motorcycle is moved while the ignition is off – something common to most thefts – the Bike Trac unit will alert Road Angel’s Security Response Call Centre who will immediately contact the owner and liaise between them and police as required.

Unfortunately, for Chris, no alert was sent when his bike was taken, as the thief had the keys. Luckily, this did not mean all was lost, because a Bike Trac subscription includes access to an online portal which logs all journey and location details for the past three months. Chris could instantly see exactly when his bike had been moved – 5.34pm – and the route it had taken, and was able to log the theft with Bike Trac.

Chris got a call back the next day and a three-way liaison began, between him, Bike Trac and the police. The last signal sent from the device had been at 8.45pm on the day the bike was stolen. After that the GPS signal had been lost, but as Bike Trac also has GPRS capabilities, experts were able to triangulate the signal and trace the bike to an underground garage on Geffrye Street, London.

There followed a waiting game – the bike would not emit any more signals until it was moved again. Five days later, that signal came. The Security Response Call Centre sprung into action and remotely activated the security device’s built-in radio signal beacon. The police were contacted, and just a few hours later they were able to seize the motorcycle – Chris was reunited with it the following day.

“My bike came fitted with Bike Trac and the sales guy persuaded me that a subscription would be a good idea,” says Chris. “I’m so glad he did. If I hadn’t signed up, a moment’s forgetfulness could have lost me my bike. I wasn’t sure how I’d stand because I’d left my keys in the ignition, but the people at Bike Trac were brilliant. They kept me regularly updated and I got the impression they were absolutely determined to get my bike back for me. I am so grateful to them and, of course, to the Police.”

The Bike Trac product, available in selected UK motorcycle dealerships now, costs £299 plus a small monthly subscription. The Bike Trac device is registered to the user and not the machine so can be transferred from bike to bike.
