Rossi breaks shin in Mugello crash

Valentino Rossi could be out for several months after breaking his shin in a high-speed accident during practice ahead of today’s Italian Grand Prix.

The world champion came off in a spectacular high-side accident which left his right shin bone protruding through his skin.

MotoGP medical director Dr Claudio Macchiagodena said: “It’s an exposed fracture with the bone protruding from the skin.

“It is a serious injury – he could be out for a couple of months but it’s too early to say yet.”

Rossi had been fastest in Friday’s practice session and was third fastest yesterday when he crashed 15 minutes from the end.

He tried to stand up but was clearly in pain and was taken to a track medical centre before being flown to a Florence hospital to have a pin and four screws inserted in his leg.

Fiat Yamaha team boss Lynn Jarvis said they would look to replace the 31-year-old Italian, with Tech 3 duo Ben Spies and Colin Edwards thought to be in the frame.

He said: “We’ve a contractual obligation to do that. Once we know his period of recovery we’ll think about it.”
