Rossi ‘positive’ after Yamaha test

Reigning World Champion Valentino Rossi is positive about his return to the MotoGP championship after a test run yesterday and could return to ride in next weekend’s German Grand Prix.

The Fiat Yamaha Team rider admitted that he still has some way to go until he will be completely fit to ride competitively in the championship, after breaking his right leg at Mugello last month.

Yesterday the Italian rider completed 2 laps of the Misano track on a YZF-R1 superbike, provided by the Yamaha World Superbike team. Rossi initially completed eleven laps, with a second run of fifteen laps and a best time of 1min 38.2secs.

However, the World Champion admitted to having pain in both his leg and his shoulder during the test runs.

He said: “We made this test in order to understand how we must work from here and to see more or less how I can ride the bike,”

“The Superbike was good and great fun to ride, [and] the test was positive, because I can at least ride, but there is a lot more to a MotoGP race than to a test like this one.

“I had some pain in the ankle, the knee and the shoulder but, above all, I lacked strength in the shoulder and a bit of movement in the ankle. I would really like to come back at Sachsenring, but it is still too early to say. We still have twelve days and we must wait and see how much we can improve my condition in the next few days. I really would like to ride at Sachsenring, but we must wait another week before making a decision.”

The 31-year-old was expected to be out of action for at least three months but has made a spectacular recovery and will continue on an improved rehabilitation programme before making a decision as to whether or not he is fit to ride at the German Grand Prix on the 18th July.
