Rossi set for Sachsenring comeback

Valentino Rossi will ride in Sachsenring this weekend, subject to approval from the FIM’s chief medical officer, Fiat Yamaha have confirmed.

Rossi will undergo a medical tomorrow, just five weeks after breaking his fibia in Mugello, before a final decision on his return to competitive racing is made.

Rossi tested a specially prepared Yamaha R1 with the Sterilgarda Yamaha WSB team yesterday in Brno and was largely satisfied with his progress, although he did admit that the pain would become an issue over a full race distance. He has been undergoing X-Rays today and has received the all-clear from doctors, although he must also pass an FIM fitness test on Thursday before he will be allowed to race.

Reports in Italy has suggested that Rossi will take part in Friday practice in Germany before deciding whether to race, although it now appears that the world champion is fully committed to making his competitive return this weekend.

“I’m really excited that my doctors think I can ride this weekend. Tomorrow I will see the medical officer and then we will have the final decision. I felt good on the R1 but I know my M1 at the track is a different thing and it will be hard for me, but I miss my bike and my team and I want to try.

“I am really looking forward to seeing everyone and being back in the paddock; I was tired of being at home! Wataru will be there as well so if there is a problem he will ride my bike again.”

Any return to action at Sachsenring by Rossi will be regarded as a miraculous recovery, after experts predicted up to six months in the stands for the 31-year-old following the high-speed crash during pre-qualifying practice at his home Grand Prix.

Yamaha test rider Wataru Yoshikawa, who stood in for Rossi in Barcelona, will be on stand-by in Germany in case Rossi is unable to race.
