Rossi to ride in MotoGP test today

Valentino Rossi is set to return to the MotoGP track today to test a Yamaha at the Italian Misano circuit, just a month after breaking his leg in the Italian Grand prix at Mugello on June 5th.

The 31-year-old Italian had been expected to be out of the running for the MotoGP championship after it was initially thought his injuries would rule him out of racing for at least three months.

However, the seven time MotoGP champion has made an astonishing recovery and is expected to return to the track later today when he tests a YZF-R1 superbike, provided by the World Superbike Championship team, which could signal a return to the MotoGP world as early as July 18th at the German Grand Prix.

Rossi had already signalled his desire to return to the championship in August for the Czech Grand Prix and has been walking with crutches since the end of June.

A Fiat Yamaha team statement said: “Valentino Rossi will ride a Yamaha YZF-R1 at a private test in Misano, Italy this afternoon.

“The Italian has made an excellent recovery so far since breaking his leg at Mugello on 5th June and he has decided to proceed with the test ride today in order to better understand his current physical condition.

“Riding a racing motorcycle will help Valentino and his doctors to plan the next stage of his rehabilitation programme in order that he may return to racing as soon as he feels confident to do so.”

Rossi has been a rider for Yamaha since 2004 but rumour has been rife that he could be joining Ducati in the next MotoGP season. His current teammate Jorge Lorenzo is currently at the top of the championship leaderboard, 52 points ahead of his competitor. In his absence Rossi has slipped to seventh place.
