Rutter claims victory at Knockhill despite severe weather conditions
Michael Rutter claimed his first victory in two years as he won the only MCE British Superbike Championship race that took place last weekend at a weather ravaged Knockhill.
The Ducati rider was joined on the podium by HM Plant Honda’s duo Ryuichi Kiyonari and Josh Brookes, but they were the only ones celebrating as all other races were called off as the weather closed in. The first race had to be red flagged twice because of torrential rain, gale force winds and poor visibility.
Rutter rode to victory in tricky conditions, which saw the race being red flagged twice. The race was stopped after a torrential downpour, delaying the start by 90 minutes. Three laps into the race saw another red flag after Chris Walker and Dan Linfoot had an incident on the first bend, which dragged mud across the track, requiring a manual cleanup.
The race eventually started once again with current championship leader Josh Brookes taking an early lead. However, Kiyonari managed to slip into the lead by lap six but was later overtaken by Rutter, the most experienced rider on the track, at the final corner chicane with five laps to go.
The rest of the races have been postponed to take place on the 17th July at Snetterton after a six rider incident occurred on the first lap of the second race, with grid positions being taken from the Knockhill outing.
Despite finishing in third Brookes is now on top in the overall standings, four points ahead of Tommy Hill who only managed to finish eighth in the Scottish race.
