Schumacher in Spain bike crash

Formula One legend Michael Schumacher has escaped unharmed from a motorcycle accident in Spain on Wednesday.

The seven-time champion, who is now riding in the German Superbikes championship, crashed during a testing session at Cartagena and was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

“Today I had an accident at the biking tests in Cartagena, and to be safe I went to a hospital,” he told his official website.

“The checks showed nothing and I just wanted to say that I am fine.”

Schumacher’s spokeswoman said the 40-year-old had been testing with his German Superbike team at the Cartagena circuit since Monday.

She said he might have to stay in hospital overnight although immediate checks showed no broken bones.

Schumacher had taken to superbikes following a glittering F1 career that yielded 91 Grand Prix victories in fifteen years of GP racing. Earlier this year, he was offered a rider with the Honda World Superbikes team and despite turning down that approach, a wild-card ride has not been ruled out.
