Security firm warns of key theft

A vehicle security company has warned of an increase in the theft of motorcycle keys after revealing that it helped to recover more than £500,000 worth of stolen motorcycles last year.

Tracker UK, which supplies tracking devices to help recover stolen cars and motorcycles, reported a 40% increase in the number of motorcycles recovered in 2009 compared with the previous year and has claimed that those figures look set to increase again in 2010, with many of those thefts now involving the theft of keys from an owner’s home.

The trend is mirrored by recent increase in car key thefts as the method is less conspicuous than other methods, enables them to disable any security systems and makes it easier for criminals to sell the bike on in future.

“In 2009 TRACKER recovered over £500,000 worth of stolen motorcycles and mopeds, which was a 40 per cent increase on 2008.  But 2010 is set to significantly exceed that,” said Stephen Doran, managing director for TRACKER. “Bike owners obviously need to make it difficult for thieves by using a range of different security options, including chains, immobilisers and markers, and keeping keys out of reach.  Most bikes are stolen by two men who load the bike into a van and are gone within minutes.  This is why motorbikes are twice as likely to be stolen as a car, but only half as likely to be recovered if not fitted with a stolen vehicle recovery system.

The company also claimed that criminals were not just targeting “prestige” models, with everything from a pizza delivery moped through to a £45,000 limited edition Ducati Desmosedici RR being recovered in 2009.
